Memoir, 1879.

Lucy Fletcher Kellogg's memoir (photocopy of a typewritten transcript) was written in 1879 when she was eighty-six years old. Mrs. Kellogg referred to her early life in Sutton and Worcester, and to the small business venture that she (at age 13) and her siblings operated to earn extra cash during the War of 1812, i.e., weaving cotton yarn from the new Massachusetts factories into shirting, gingham, and bed ticking. She also related several anecdotes concerning events during her early life, e.g., the death of George Washington in 1799. The memoir includes a description of the 500 mile trip to Chautauqua County by covered wagon and packet ship; the early years of her marriage and her husband's business losses in Jamestown; and anecdotes about the family's lengthy trip to Louisiana in 1839. She described briefly their cotton-growing venture and the number of slaves they owned, as well as the frequent fevers that assailed them and eventually caused her husband's death. Finally, she commented on her children's lives and business ventures in New Orleans, Louisiana, Oberlin, Ohio, and Keokuk, Iowa. Also included is a 3-page memoir of her son, Charles Augustus Kellogg (1821-1897), who worked in New Orleans for a number of years before establishing a firm in Keokuk in 1855. Included are references to years of financial struggle before Kellogg, Birge, and Company developed into the largest wholesale grocery firm in Iowa. The collection also includes a typewritten transcript copy of an account, 1841, of James Harris Fairchild's (1817-1902) trip to Louisiana from Oberlin, Ohio. Lucy Fletcher Kellogg's son-in-law's account describes the long journey through slavery country and the dangers facing a person associated with Oberlin College while traveling south at that time. The account was actually written in 1889.
